Help with a Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury, or catastrophic brain injury, affects approximately 1.5 million Americans per year, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). CDC also estimates that about 5.3 million U.S. citizens - about 2 percent of the population - live with issues related to traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI is not necessarily a killer, though about 50,000 people die every year from TBI. Yearly, 80,000 to 90,000 people suffer from a long-term disability because of TBI.

Risk Groups

TBI can happen to anyone. However, seniors older than 75 years of age, young adults and adolescents have a higher risk of dying or suffering from long-term effects of TBI. If you suspect a loved one has suffered a TBI, you should seek medical attention because TBI can be treated.  You should also contact a lawyer at Barker Wilson Law Firm in Rapid City and Belle Fourche. Medical treatment and rehabilitation of a person with a TBI can be very expensive. If another person or entity negligently, recklessly or intentionally caused your loved one's traumatic brain injury, they may be legally responsible to compensate for the harm they have caused.

Leading Causes of Catastrophic Brain Injury

According to the CDC, the leading causes of TBI are motor vehicle crashes, falls, suicidal acts, assaults and other violence.  Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause that results in TBI-related hospitalization. Violence is the leading cause of TBI-related deaths. Falls are the leading cause of TBI-related injuries and deaths in the elderly.

The Financial Cost of Brain Injury

The injuries that cause catastrophic brain injury may have long-term effects on the injured person as well as their family. The CDC reports that the economic burden to the United States of TBI-related injuries and deaths in 1985 was $37.8 billion, which does not include the loss of enjoyment of life or other human losses.  Long term disabilities caused by TBI may permanently alter an individual's vocational abilities and include emotional, motor, sensory and cognitive impairments. If these impairments are severe enough, the injured person may have to rely on family and medical care for months or years.

If you or a loved one are suffering from traumatic brain injury, contact Barker Wilson Law Firm to discuss your rights and options.
